You all know that an apple a day can keep the doctor away. But can it also keep the extra pounds away?
According to a recent research in Food Chemistry, yes it can. This is because apples have non-digestible compounds that helps promote the growth of good bacteria in your gut, that is associated with weight loss.
The compounds polyphenols and fiber, remain undigested until they are fermented in the colon. In the colon, they act as food for friendly bacteria and help the body outweigh the bad bacteria that thrives on junk food.
This restored microbial balance is known to reduce chronic inflammation, that increases the obesity risk and and boosts feelings of fullness which help fight overeating.
According to a food scientist, obese individuals have an out-of-balance gut,. Therefore changing gut bacteria through what you eat, by making it the same to that of a lean individual, could help prevent weight gain. In the study conducted, obese mice that were given apple compounds ended up with a gut bacteria that is the same with that of a lean mice.
Tart Granny Smiths are recommended. This is because it contains the highest concentration of polyphenols and fiber as compared to varieties like McIntosh, Gala and Golden Delicious.
Do you need more reason to embrace this fall fruit? Past research links apple to a healthier immune system, reduced risk of stroke, high cholesterol, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Consume one to three apples per day. An apple pie or apple will not do. This is because cooking destroys the polyphenols in apples.
